Biography of Jean-Pierre Vernant

Jean-Pierre Vernant was a renowned historian of antiquity, anthropologist, and a hero of the Resistance movement. He was a member of various scientific societies and received several awards from the French government. Vernant was an officer of the Legion of Honor, a participant in the Resistance, and a recipient of the Military Cross, among other honors.

Early Life and Education

Jean-Pierre Vernant was born on January 4, 1914. He studied at the Carnot High School and later attended the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1937, he obtained the title of agrégé, which granted him the right to lecture at universities, specifically in the field of philosophy.

Resistance during World War II

During World War II, Vernant became an active participant in the Resistance movement. Under the pseudonym Colonel Berthier, he led the French internal resistance forces in the southwest of France.

Academic Career

After 1945, Jean-Pierre Vernant resumed his scholarly activities, focusing his interests on the history of Greek thought. He held various positions within the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). In 1975, he was elected as a professor of Comparative Studies of Ancient Religions at the Collège de France. Upon his retirement in 1984, he became an honorary professor at the same institution.

Contributions to Soviet Union

Jean-Pierre Vernant made multiple visits to the Soviet Union. His first visit occurred in 1934, as part of a delegation of university professors and students. He lectured and conducted seminars on his research as per the invitation of the Institute for the History of Natural Science and Technology of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Awards and Honors
