Early Life and Education

Born into a peasant family in the town of Murom, Ivan Semenovich Kulikov's father possessed exceptional skills in roofing and painting. Kulikov's talent for art emerged under the guidance of his drawing and art teacher, N.A. Tovstev. In 1893, he met artist A.I. Morozov, who recognized Kulikov's abilities and recommended his enrollment in the School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts in St. Petersburg.

Artistic Training and Influences

In 1894, Kulikov joined the School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, where he received instruction from renowned artists N.I. Makarov, A.F. Afanasyev, and E.K. Liphart. In 1896, he became a part-time student at the Academy of Arts under V.E. Makovsky but soon transferred to the prestigious studio of I.E. Repin.

Collaborations and Recognition

Kulikov's collaboration with Repin on the monumental painting "Meeting of the State Council" (1901-1902) cemented his status as a talented portraitist. He also illustrated works by Maxim Gorky and exhibited his paintings, earning recognition and awards at international exhibitions. In 1902, he graduated from the Academy of Arts with the prestigious Big Gold Medal, securing him the title of Honorary Citizen and an opportunity for a study trip abroad.

European Sojourn and Exhibitions

From 1903 to 1905, Kulikov traveled to Italy and France as a pensioner of the Academy of Arts. His acclaimed "Portrait of Mother" (1903) earned him the Big Silver Medal at the World Exhibition in Liège in 1905. In subsequent exhibitions, he received the Kuindzhi Prize for "On a Festive Day" (1906) and "With Lanterns in the Garden" (1906).

Preserving Murom's Heritage

Upon his return to Russia, Kulikov played a pivotal role in preserving Murom's cultural legacy. As head of the art department of the Murom Museum, he meticulously collected and curated paintings, sculptures, and historical artifacts from abandoned palaces and estates. His efforts ensured the preservation of the invaluable collections of the Uvarov family in Karacharovo.

Artistic Achievements and Honors

Kulikov's portraits captured the likenesses of notable figures, including aviator V.P. Chkalov, writer Maxim Gorky, and archaeologist A.S. Uvarov. His wife, Elizabeth Arkadyevna, and daughter, Tatiana, also served as inspirations for his artworks. In 1915, he received the title of Academician of Painting for his series of paintings depicting Murom.

Legacy and Memory

Kulikov's memory lives on through the establishment of a memorial House-Museum in his former home in 1947. While the museum was closed in 2007, its collection remains housed in the Murom Historical and Art Museum. The artist's legacy continues to inspire and connect future generations with the rich artistic traditions of Murom.
