Early Life
Ivan Ivanovich Mlad (young), Prince of Tver, was the son of Grand Prince Ivan III Vasilyevich of Moscow and his first wife, Princess Maria Borisovna of Tver. He was born in Moscow on February 15, 1458.
Military and Political Roles
Ivan accompanied his father on military campaigns against Khan Ibrahim of Kazan in 1468 and Novgorod in 1471. During the first invasion by Khan Akhmat of the Kipchak Khanate in 1472, he remained in Rostov with his grandmother. In 1475, he was entrusted with governing Moscow while his father negotiated his marriage to the daughter of Isaik, Prince of Mangup.
During the second invasion by Khan Akhmat in 1480, Ivan led the Moscow forces to Serpukhov and confronted the Tatars on the Ugra River. He refused to retreat despite his father's orders, stating that he was "waiting for the Tatars." This defiance nearly resulted in his arrest.
Religious Affairs
In 1483, Ivan unsuccessfully attempted to convince Metropolitan Gerontius of Moscow to return from a self-imposed exile. The dispute centered on the proper liturgical practice of facing the sun during worship.
Prince of Tver
In 1485, Ivan accompanied his father on a campaign against Tver. After its capture, Ivan was proclaimed Prince of Tver by Ivan III.
Marriage and Family
Ivan married Elena, the daughter of Stefan IV, Voivode of Moldavia, on January 6, 1483. Their son, Dmitry, would become Grand Prince of Vladimir and Moscow.
Later Years and Death
Ivan passed away in Moscow on March 7, 1490. He was laid to rest in the Archangel Cathedral in Moscow.
