Early Life and Military Career

Ivan Petrovich Neustruyev was born on August 15, 1915, in the village of Skvorechnoye, Penza Oblast. Coming from a peasant family, he pursued his initial education before joining the Red Army in 1934. In 1937, he graduated from the Kharkiv Military Aviation School of Pilots.

Neustruyev participated in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940. With the outbreak of World War II, he engaged in combat operations from the war's outset on the Leningrad and 1st Belorussian fronts. He served in the 195th and later the 11th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiments.

Combat Achievements

By August 1943, Major Neustruyev had flown 128 combat sorties and participated in 55 air battles. He had personally shot down 11 enemy aircraft and six in group attacks. Additionally, he had destroyed 20 aircraft on the ground, 15 anti-aircraft guns, and numerous enemy personnel.

As commander of the 11th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, Neustruyev led his unit in 407 combat sorties, resulting in the shooting down of 35 enemy aircraft. For his bravery and heroism, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on September 28, 1943.

Post-War Career

After the war, Neustruyev continued his service in the Soviet Air Force in various command positions. In 1946, he graduated from the Higher Officer Flight Tactical Courses. He retired with the rank of Guards Colonel in 1949.

Neustruyev settled in Leningrad, where he worked until his passing on February 10, 1965. He was buried with honors in his hometown of Kamenka, Penza Oblast, where a stele and bust were erected in his memory.

Notable Aerial Combats

Neustruyev's courage and tactical prowess were exemplified in several notable aerial combats.

On September 10, 1941, he shot down two German aircraft during a fierce battle over Kolomenskoye.

During another engagement, Neustruyev and his wingman detected a large formation of enemy bombers. They cleverly maneuvered into a favorable position, attacking and downing two of the bombers.

In a subsequent incident, Neustruyev expertly demonstrated an evasive technique to counter an enemy rear attack, shooting down his adversary with a single burst.

Historical Recognition

Neustruyev's achievements are chronicled in the book "Air Defense Forces of the USSR in the Great Patriotic War, 1941-1945." His name appears on pages 221 and 228, highlighting his exceptional performance in air battles on June 18 and July 16, 1943.

By the end of the war, Neustruyev had attained the rank of Guards Lieutenant Colonel and the position of commander of the 11th Guards Vyborg Fighter Aviation Regiment. His final victory tally was 23 aircraft: 17 personally shot down and six in cooperation with his comrades.
