Early Life and Soviet Army Service

Ivan Yosypovych Svyda was born in Ukraine and graduated from Uzhhorod State University in 1972. He was drafted into the Soviet Army as an officer for two years, serving as a motorized rifle platoon commander in the Carpathian Military District. Upon completion of his conscription, he requested permanent assignment in the Armed Forces.

Military Education and Career

In 1975, Svyda graduated from the Ordzhonikidze Higher Combined Arms Command School as an external student. He held various command positions in motorized rifle units, including platoon commander, company commander, and battalion commander. In 1980, he graduated from the Frunze Military Academy.

Post-Soviet Military Service

After Ukraine's independence, Svyda joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 1992. He served as commander of the 17th Tank Division, chief of staff and first deputy commander of the 32nd Army Corps (Crimea), and first deputy commander of the Southern Operational Command. In 2005, he became commander of the Southern Operational Command and in 2007, Commander-in-Chief of the Land Forces of Ukraine.

Chief of the General Staff

In 2009, Svyda was appointed Chief of the General Staff and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was promoted to the rank of General of the Army by President Viktor Yushchenko in 2010. As Chief of the General Staff, Svyda emphasized the need to improve the living conditions of the army and called for increased funding.

Retirement and Legacy

Svyda resigned from his post as Chief of the General Staff in 2010 and was succeeded by Hryhoriy Pedchenko. He holds the degree of Candidate of Military Sciences (2010). Svyda is married and has a daughter and a son.
