Early Life and Career
Ivan Vishnevsky began his hockey career in his hometown of Barnaul, Russia, with the youth team "Motor". In 2005, he moved to Canada to join the QMJHL's Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, who had selected him in the 2nd round of the CHL Import Draft.
NHL Draft and Debut
In 2006, Vishnevsky was drafted 27th overall by the Dallas Stars in the 1st round of the NHL Entry Draft. After spending three seasons with the Huskies, he signed a three-year contract with the Stars in 2007. He made his NHL debut on April 7, 2009, against the Minnesota Wild.
Farm System Journey
Vishnevsky initially spent most of his time in the AHL with the Peoria Rivermen. However, he briefly returned to the NHL in the 2009/10 season with the Texas Stars, recording an unfortunate own goal. In February 2010, he was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers for Kari Lehtonen.
AHL Dominance and Team Hopping
After another year in the AHL, Vishnevsky was traded to the newly crowned Stanley Cup champions, the Chicago Blackhawks, in 2010. However, he remained in the AHL with the Rockford IceHogs throughout the season. In 2011, he returned to the KHL, signing with Atlant Mytishchi. He later played for Salavat Yulaev Ufa (2013-2016), Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod (2016-2017), Traktor Chelyabinsk (2017-2019), and Spartak Moscow (2019-2020).
Later Career and Return to Russia
After a short stint with the Slovakian club Poprad in 2021, Vishnevsky returned to Russia to play in the amateur Novosibirsk League. In 2020, he signed a contract with HC Lada Togliatti until the end of the season.
