Despite limited playing time during his collegiate days at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Eaton's exceptional height caught the attention of a few NBA teams. The Utah Jazz, under the guidance of coach Frank Layden, recognized his defensive potential and selected him with the 72nd overall pick in the fourth round of the 1982 NBA draft. Layden's decision was guided by the iconic quote from Red Auerbach: "You can't teach height."
