Ivan Petrovich Vitkovsky was born on October 9, 1914, in the village of Borovka, currently located in the Mogilev-Podolsky district of the Vinnitsa region in Ukraine. He was born into a working-class family. Vitkovsky joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1943. He completed three courses at a mechanotechnological technical college and attended a worker's faculty. In 1938, he graduated from the Odessa Military Aviation School.
During the Great Patriotic War, Vitkovsky served on the frontlines from February 1943. He was the commander of the 66th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, which was part of the 4th Guards Fighter Aviation Division, 1st Guards Fighter Aviation Corps, 3rd Air Army, and 1st Baltic Front. He received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on February 23, 1945, for his outstanding achievements in 112 combat missions and shooting down 15 enemy aircraft.
On July 29, 1944, Vitkovsky demonstrated exceptional bravery by ramming a fascist plane during an aerial battle. Throughout the war, he completed a total of 357 combat missions and shot down 22 enemy aircraft in 148 aerial fights. After the war, Vitkovsky continued his service in the Air Force until 1950, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
In 1959, he graduated from Kiev State University. Following his military career, Vitkovsky lived in Kiev and worked as a school director. He was honored with various awards, including the Order of Lenin, four Orders of the Red Banner, and two Orders of the Patriotic War 1st Class, as well as several medals.
Ivan Petrovich Vitkovsky passed away on September 23, 1996. His bravery and contributions to the Soviet Union during World War II will always be remembered.
