Biography of Viktor Subbotin

Viktor Fedorovich Subbotin was born on April 20, 1924, in the city of Krasnodon, in a miner's family. From an early age, he learned to read and recited poetry with great expression. In 1931, at the age of seven, he started attending the 1st grade of School No. 1 named after A. M. Gorky. He was a good student and enjoyed hiking and participating in amateur art circles. He had a talent for singing and playing the guitar. However, he was particularly drawn to the technical circle at the city's Pioneer Club. Even as a teenager, he exhibited traits such as courage and resourcefulness. Radiy Petrovich Yurkin remembered a time when they were swimming in the Kamenskaya River and he got caught on a snag. Viktor jumped into the water and pulled him out.

In 1938, Viktor joined the Komsomol (Young Communist League). After completing the 7th grade in 1938, he enrolled in the Rostov Electromechanical Technical School. However, his studies were interrupted by the war, and he returned to Krasnodon, where he started working at the military enlistment office. During the occupation, Subbotin became a locksmith in a mine and frequently visited the local underground center, where he became close friends with Anatoly Orlov and Volodya Osmukhin. In October 1942, on the recommendation of Ivan Turkennich, he joined the underground organization "Young Guard." He participated in many military operations, collecting weapons, distributing leaflets, and conducting propaganda among the population in neighboring villages.

When many members of the underground Komsomol organization were arrested in early January 1943, Subbotin did not leave the city and instead tried to help the arrested Young Guardsmen escape. He was arrested on the morning of January 31 and brutally beaten on the street. On the same day, he was sent to the Rovenkovskaya district gendarmerie along with Lyuba Shevtsova, Semyon Ostapenko, and Dmitry Ogurtsov. After severe torture and beatings, Viktor Subbotin was executed on February 9, 1943, in the Gremling Forest. He was buried in a mass grave of victims of fascism in the center of Rovenki, in the "Young Guard" Square.

Viktor Fedorovich Subbotin was posthumously awarded the "Partisan of the Patriotic War" Medal of the 1st degree.
