Biography of Marco Materazzi

Marco Materazzi is an Italian professional football player who primarily played as a central defender. He is known for his tough and aggressive style of play, specializing in intercepting opponent's aerial deliveries. Materazzi also possessed excellent shooting skills.

Early Career

Marco Materazzi made his debut for the Italian national team in April 2001 during a friendly match against South Africa. At the age of 27, Materazzi was considered relatively old for a debutante. Since then, he became a key player for the national team. He was selected as a replacement for Alessandro Nesta and Fabio Cannavaro for the FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea, appearing as a substitute in one match. Although he was not included in the squad for the qualifying campaign, Materazzi returned to the team for the European Championships.

Club Career

In January 1995, at the age of 21, Materazzi joined Perugia from Trapani. However, after playing just one game, he was loaned out to Capri, where he appeared in 18 matches. In the 1997/98 season, Marco returned to Perugia, which was then competing in Serie B, and spent the entire season there. He later moved to Everton in England, with the transfer fee amounting to 3 million euros.

Rise to Prominence

Upon his return to Italy and Perugia in 1999, Materazzi blossomed as a player. He played 21 games and scored three goals in the 1999/00 season. Materazzi became the team's regular penalty-taker and scored 12 goals in the following season, setting a record for the highest-scoring defender in Serie A that season. As a result, he was signed by Inter Milan for 10.5 million euros.

Success at Inter Milan

During his first season at Inter Milan, Materazzi became one of the key players for the team. In the following season, he appeared in 33 matches, and Inter Milan reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they were defeated by AC Milan.

Challenges and Personal Life

In the 2003/04 season, Materazzi scored three goals in 14 Serie A matches. However, he received a two-month suspension for hitting Siena defender Bruno Cirillo, causing him to miss three rounds of the UEFA Cup. Marco Materazzi is the son of former Sporting Lisbon coach Giuseppe Materazzi.
