Early Life and Family

Born in Western Belarus, Ivonka Survilla's family was deeply involved in the Belarusian national movement. Her father, Vladimir Shimanets, was an engineer who was imprisoned after Belarus joined the USSR but managed to escape during the Nazi invasion. The Shimanets family fled to East Prussia in 1944, later moving to Denmark, France, and Spain. Vladimir Shimanets later served as Finance Minister in Vasil Zakharo's Belarusian government-in-exile.

Education and Early Career

Ivonka Survilla studied philology at the Sorbonne University. In 1969, she settled permanently in Canada, where she worked as a translator.

Leadership Roles

In 1974, Survilla was elected Chair of the Belarusian Institute of Science and Art in Canada. In 1984, she joined the board of Canada's Multicultural Council. She also founded the Canadian Chernobyl Relief Fund.

Presidency of the Rada of the Belarusian Democratic Republic in Exile

Since 1997, Ivonka Survilla has served as the Chair of the Rada of the Belarusian Democratic Republic in Exile, a government body representing the Belarusian people outside of the communist regime. She has been a vocal advocate for democratic values and Belarusian independence.

Personal Life

In 1959, Ivonka Shimanets married Yanka Survilla, a Belarusian exile and director of Belarusian broadcasts for Spanish National Radio. They had two daughters, Anna Predslava and Paulina.

Activism

In 2020, Survilla expressed support for Belarusian citizens protesting against President Alexander Lukashenko. During the subsequent mass protests, she issued a statement on behalf of the Rada BNR supporting the demonstrators and urging Western countries to intervene in the crisis.
