Biography of Iwao Hakamada

Iwao Hakamada is a Japanese professional boxer who spent 46 years on death row for the murder of his boss, his boss's wife, and their two children. In August 1966, Hakamada was arrested for the killing of four people. In September 1968, he was sentenced to death by hanging by the Shizuoka District Court. In November 1980, the Supreme Court of Japan upheld the death penalty.

Support from a Judge

In 2007, Norimichi Kumamoto, one of the three judges who sentenced Hakamada to death, expressed his support for him and stated that he had always believed in his innocence. However, at the time of the verdict, he was unable to convince the other two judges of the defendant's innocence.

Additional DNA Analysis

In March 2012, blood samples were taken from Hakamada for a more accurate DNA analysis to compare with the blood sample found at the crime scene. The results of the analysis were inconclusive.

Record in the Guinness Book of World Records

In 2011, Iwao Hakamada was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the person who had spent the longest time on death row, surpassing 44 years.

Release from Prison

In March 2014, a court in Shizuoka ruled that Hakamada's DNA did not match the genetic material found at the crime scene and subsequently released the 78-year-old man.
