Princess Isabella of Poland and Lithuania
Princess Isabella was born as the daughter of King Sigismund I the Old of Poland and Lithuania. Through her marriage to John Zápolya in 1539, she became Queen of Hungary.
Queen of Hungary
Isabella's reign as Queen of Hungary was marked by a struggle to secure the throne for her infant son, John Sigismund Zápolya, who was elected as the King of Hungary.
Rule of Transylvania
In 1541, after the Ottomans captured Buda, Suleiman the Magnificent assigned Isabella to rule Transylvania on behalf of her son. However, real power was wielded by Cardinal George Martinuzzi.
Transylvanian Accord
In 1549, Isabella and the representatives of King Ferdinand I of Austria agreed to return Transylvania to the Kingdom of Hungary.
Loss and Recapture of Transylvania
In 1551, Isabella was forced to leave Transylvania, which was transferred to Ferdinand I under the Treaty of Nyírbátor. She later returned with her son in 1556.
Legacy
Isabella died in Alba Iulia on September 15, 1559. Her head was preserved as a sacred relic and transported to Madrid, where it was carried by Archbishop Luis Zapata de Cárdenas. In 1573, he had it placed in a silver casket in the city's main church, declaring Isabella the protector of the city, with her feast day set for November 19.
