Biography of François Jacob
François Jacob was a French biologist and Nobel laureate in Physiology and Medicine in 1965. He was born on June 17, 1920, in Nancy, France.
Early Life and Education
After completing his studies at the Lycée Carnot in Paris, François Jacob enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at the Sorbonne, where he chose surgery as his specialization. However, his education was interrupted by World War II.
War Service and Injuries
In June 1940, Jacob joined the Free French Forces, which were based in London. He was assigned as a military doctor to the Second Armored Division, which was deployed to Africa. In August 1944, he was severely wounded and spent seven months in a hospital. After recovering, he was awarded the Cross of Liberation, one of France's highest military honors.
Scientific Career
Following the war, Jacob completed his education and received his medical degree in 1947. However, his injuries prevented him from becoming a surgeon. In 1950, he began working at the Pasteur Institute under the guidance of André Lwoff. His early scientific research at the Pasteur Institute focused on the genetic mechanisms present in bacteria and bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) and the biochemical effects of mutations.
By the early 1950s, it was already known that genes, which carry hereditary information, are located in the chromosomes of a cell's nucleus. The chemical structure of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) had been discovered. It was also established that genes consist of sections of DNA.
Jacob's research revealed that the chromosomes of bacterial cells are circular structures attached to the cell membrane. Furthermore, he discovered one type of RNA called messenger RNA, which carries genetic information from DNA to the cell. Another significant discovery was the presence of two types of genes within the structure of DNA. Some genes are responsible for transmitting genetic information and controlling protein synthesis (known as structural genes), while others regulate biochemical processes in the cell (regulatory genes). The activity of regulatory genes allows an organism to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Similar genes were found in bacteriophages, and when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, the structural genes responsible for self-replication were activated. Based on these findings, it was concluded that the activation of latent viruses in the body is one of the causes of cancerous tumors.
Nobel Prize and Later Work
Starting in 1954, Jacob collaborated extensively with Élie Wollman. Together, they proposed several theories regarding the mechanism of genetic information transfer from male to female individuals, including the concept of episomes (extrachromosomal elements of heredity). In 1960, Jacob became the head of the Department of Cellular Genetics at the Pasteur Institute. In 1964, he assumed the leadership of the newly established Chair of Cellular Genetics at the Collège de France.
In 1965, François Jacob, along with André Lwoff and Jacques Monod, was awarded the Nobel Prize "for their discoveries concerning genetic control of enzyme and virus synthesis." From 1963 onwards, Jacob focused on the genetic analysis of cell division mechanisms and, in collaboration with Sydney Brenner, proposed the hypothesis of "replicons" (the smallest genetic elements capable of self-replication).
Recognition and Achievements
François Jacob received numerous honors and awards throughout his career. These included the Charles Leopold Mayer Prize from the French Academy of Sciences in 1962. He was an honorary member of several prestigious academies, including the Danish Royal Academy of Sciences and Letters, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, and the American Philosophical Society. He also held honorary doctorates from various universities.
