Early Life and Education

Russian writer, playwright, and essayist Yevgeny Yevtushenko was born into a family of educators on December 8, 1932, in the town of Zima, Irkutsk Oblast, Russia. His father, Semen Lazarevich Yevtushenko, was a teacher at a local school, while his mother, Maria Ivanovna, was a doctor. After graduating from secondary school with honors, Yevtushenko went on to study physics and optics at Kharkiv State University, where he earned a diploma in 1954.

Military and Professional Career

Following his graduation, Yevtushenko was drafted into the Soviet Army and served as an officer for two years. After completing his military service, he worked as a physics teacher and engineer in Ukraine. Upon relocating to Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), he found employment as a programmer at LOMO and as a department head at VPTI Elektro.

Emigration and Literary Beginnings

In 1991, Yevtushenko emigrated to Germany, settling in Hanover. There, he secured a position as a manager in a machine-building firm. It was during his time in Germany that he began writing. His first publication, an essay titled "Our People Have Come," appeared in the "Yevreyskaya Gazeta" ("Jewish Gazette") in 1992.

Radio Broadcasts and Later Works

Over the following two years, Yevtushenko produced a series of reports and essays for Radio Liberty's programs "People and Society" and "Writers at the Microphone." These broadcasts garnered significant attention and established his reputation as a respected literary voice. Yevtushenko continued to write throughout his life, producing a vast body of work that included poetry, novels, plays, and screenplays. He passed away on April 1, 2017, at the age of eighty-four.
