Yuri Grekov: A Distinguished Moldavian Writer
Early Life and CareerBorn in Cahul, Moldova to a Bulgarian family, Yuri Grekov embarked on a writing career after working in regional newspapers until 1964. He then joined the Moldavian Republican press and became a member of the Writers' Union of the USSR in 1975. From 1988 until his passing, he served as chief editor of the literary journal "Codri (Literary Moldova)."
Literary Achievements
Grekov's first publication, "Blue Sparks," a children's book, was released in 1966. Over the years, he authored more than twenty books, including "Oedipus' Arrow" (published in Germany, 1981), "On Circles of Time" (Bulgaria, 1982), "Caliph for One Hour" (Romania, 1990), and "Eminescu in the Mirror of Philately" (Russia and Romania, 1995). Additionally, he translated prose from Ukrainian, Romanian, and Bulgarian.
"Encyclopedia of Yuri Grekov"
Grekov's most notable work was the ten-volume "Encyclopedia of Yuri Grekov from A to Z." Seven volumes have been published in Russian and Romanian to date: "Romania in Faces," "Surprises, Curiosities, and All Sorts," "Homeland," "Oh, Women," "On the Threshold of the Universe," "How It Was," and "Crowns, Crowns, Crowns." Others, including "Famous, Very Famous, and Very, Very Famous Jews," "Name on the Map," and "Masons. Who Are They?" are in preparation for publication (currently available in magazine format).
Recognition and Legacy
Grekov received numerous accolades, including the "Mihai Eminescu" medal (1996) for literary contributions, the "Gloria Muncii" Order (1998), and the highest honor in Moldova, the Order of the Republic (2010). He passed away on August 19, 2010, and was laid to rest on August 21, 2010. Grekov's legacy as a distinguished Moldavian writer continues to inspire and entertain readers today.
