Early Life and Education

Born in Wągrowiec, Poland, Jakob Wujek was a Polish Catholic preacher and Jesuit. His early education included studies in philosophy, mathematics, and Greek at the university in Vienna (1562-1564).

Jesuit Vocation and Theological Studies

In 1565, Wujek joined the Jesuit order. He traveled to Rome where he studied theology from 1565 to 1567.

Teaching and Administrative Roles

Returning to Poland, Wujek taught at a Jesuit school in Pułtusk (1568). He later served as the rector of Jesuit colleges in Poznań (1571-1578), Vilnius (1578-1579), Cluj-Napoca (1579-1584), and Kraków (1589-1592).

Vice-Provincial of the Jesuits

In 1586, Wujek became the vice-provincial of the Jesuit order in Poland. He played a significant role in the Counter-Reformation, supporting the Catholic faith against Protestant movements.

Religious Writings

Wujek was a prolific writer and translator. He authored and compiled numerous religious texts, including "Postilla Catholica" (1573) and "O Kosciele Pana Chrystusowym prawdziwym" (1580).

Bible Translation

Wujek's most notable contribution was his translation of the Bible into Polish. His New Testament translation was published in 1593 and 1594, followed by the Psalms in 1594 and the full Bible in 1599.

Legacy

Jakob Wujek's Bible translation became the standard Polish version for centuries. His other writings and administrative roles made him a prominent figure in the Polish Catholic Church. He was interred in the crypt of St. Barbara's Church in Kraków.
