Early Life and Education
Zenon Grocholewski was born on October 11, 1939, in Brodki, Poland. He received his primary education in the Archdiocesan Seminary in Poznań, where he studied philosophy and theology. He then pursued graduate studies in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University, earning a licentiate and a doctorate. Additionally, Grocholewski underwent language courses in Germany and France, becoming proficient in Italian and English.
Priestly Ordination and Service
On May 27, 1963, Grocholewski was ordained to the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Poznań. He served for three years in the parish of Christ the Redeemer in Poznań before returning to Rome to complete his doctoral studies in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University. From 1972 to 1999, he worked at the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, serving in various roles, including notary, acting chancellor, chancellor, secretary, and, from 1998 to 1999, prefect.
Elevation to the Cardinalate
On December 21, 1981, Grocholewski was appointed Titular Bishop of Agropoli. On December 16, 1991, he was elevated to the rank of archbishop. On February 21, 2001, he was created a cardinal by Pope John Paul II, with the title of Cardinal-Deacon of San Nicola in Carcere. He participated in the papal conclaves of 2005 and 2013.
Prefecture of the Congregation for Catholic Education
On November 15, 1999, Grocholewski was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education and Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Gregorian University. He held these positions until March 31, 2015, when Pope Francis accepted his resignation.
Member of Dicasteries of the Roman Curia
Grocholewski held memberships in several dicasteries of the Roman Curia, including the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Congregation for Bishops, the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts, and the Special Council for Oceania of the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops.
Later Life and Legacy
Grocholewski passed away on July 17, 2020, in Rome. He was recognized as one of the leading experts in modern canon law. He received numerous honors and awards, including the Commander with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta and honorary doctorates from several universities.
