Jamal Akachar: From Ajax Driver to Moroccan International

Jamal Akachar, a Dutch-Moroccan forward, began his footballing journey at the prestigious Ajax Amsterdam academy. However, despite promising performances for Ajax 2, Akachar failed to secure a professional contract. This led him to play for the amateur side Ajax Zaterdag, while supplementing his income as a taxi driver in Amsterdam.

Breakthrough and Setbacks at Ajax

On December 9, 2002, Ajax finally offered Akachar a one-and-a-half-year contract. He made his Eredivisie debut on April 5, 2003, coming on as a substitute in a 4-1 victory over Rozenburg. Despite this promising start, Akachar remained limited to appearances with the reserve team for the next two seasons.

Move to Cambuur and Controversies

In 2004, Akachar signed a two-year deal with Cambuur Leeuwarden in the Dutch second division. He scored five goals in 27 appearances in his first season. However, his time at Cambuur was marred by disciplinary issues. After missing a training session, Akachar was suspended by head coach Roy Wesseling. The situation worsened when he was arrested for refusing to return a club-owned Volkswagen Golf to Cambuur. The club subsequently dismissed Akachar in January 2006.

Moroccan Interlude and Return to Netherlands

In June 2007, Akachar moved to Moroccan club Maghreb Fez for a three-year contract. However, he terminated his deal in October 2008 due to unpaid wages. A trial period at Dutch side FC Emmen proved unsuccessful.

Later Years

In March 2014, Akachar returned to Ajax for an annual reunion of former players. At just 31 years old, he was the youngest attendee of the 129 ex-players present.
