James Champy: Management Expert and Author
Early Career and EducationIn 1963, James Champy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Two years later, he obtained a Master of Science degree in civil engineering from the same institution. In 1968, he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Boston College Law School.
Corporate Transformation and Consulting
Champy is a renowned management expert specializing in reengineering, organizational change, and corporate renewal. He has served as a senior advisor to top executives in international corporations seeking to enhance their business efficiency. His approach focuses on empowering business leaders through the integration of business strategies, operational management, organizational development, and information technology.
Academic Affiliations
Currently, Champy serves as a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Business School's Advanced Leadership Initiative. He is a life member of the MIT Corporation and serves on the Board of Advisors for his law school. Additionally, he is a member of the Board of Directors for Analog Devices, Inc.
Leadership Roles in Consulting Firms
Prior to his academic appointments, Champy held leadership roles in consulting firms. He was the former Chairman of Dell Perot Systems (now Dell Services), leading its business and management consulting practice. Before that, he served as Chairman and CEO of CSC Index, a consulting subsidiary of Computer Sciences Corporation. Champy was also one of the four founders of CSC Index, a $200 million practice acquired by CSC in 1988.
Bestselling Author
Champy is the co-author of the 1994 New York Times bestseller, "Reengineering the Corporation." His subsequent book, "Reengineering Management," became a bestseller in 1995 and was recognized by Business Week as the Best Business Book of the Year.
Additional Publications
Champy collaborated with Nitin Nohria, Dean of Harvard Business School, on the 2001 book, "The Arc of Ambition." He also co-edited "Fast Forward," a collection of groundbreaking articles from the Harvard Business Review.
Champy's other notable works include "X-Engineering the Corporation, Reinventing Your Business in the Digital Age" (2002), "Outsmart! How To Do What Your Competitors Can't" (2008), "Inspire!
