The Famous and Wealthy Irving Family

James, Arthur, and John Irving are members of the famous and wealthy Irving family. They are among the richest people in Canada, having amassed their fortune in the oil industry. Their empire was founded in 1881 by J.D. Irving.

Kenneth Colin Irving's Contribution

Kenneth Colin Irving, a shrewd and visionary businessman, made a significant contribution to the development of the family's companies and the increase in their wealth. His relatively low-risk activities allowed him to leave his three sons – James, Arthur, and John – a massive oil processing company and other assets that continue to generate enormous profits to this day.

Expansion and Diversification

Under Kenneth Colin Irving's leadership, the company, which initially consisted of a few gas stations, transformed into a massive conglomerate encompassing oil refining, trading, and gas stations. The system of companies experienced significant growth after World War II. Kenneth Colin Irving's intelligence and foresight were evident in two ways. Firstly, he diversified the companies to include construction, food products, metals, building materials, and more. Secondly, most deliveries from one company to another were carried out within the conglomerate, creating a closed loop where profits rarely left its boundaries. This system remains largely intact today.

Current Ventures and Wealth

The family owns Canada's largest oil processing plant, which is part of the Irving Oil conglomerate. Given the constant rise in oil and fuel prices, the family continues to increase its wealth. As of 2007, their estimated wealth was around $5.5 billion. However, since all the Irving family companies are private, the exact extent of their wealth remains unknown.

Forest Holdings and Fuel Stations

In addition to their oil ventures, the family owns extensive forest properties in Canada and Maine, totaling approximately 3.6 million acres. These properties supply timber to numerous sawmills and paper factories. The family's over 600 fuel stations across Canada, both inherited from their father and acquired by the brothers, serve as a lucrative source of income.

Additional Ventures and Investments

The Irving brothers, along with their partners, are involved in the development of a natural gas pumping terminal. The family also owns four newspapers and is known for their charitable and investment activities in support of journalism and the newspaper industry. However, they prefer to keep their charitable endeavors private, and a significant portion of their activities likely remain unknown to the public.
