James Adam "Jim" Belushi was born on June 15, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, USA, to Albanian immigrant parents Adam Anastas Belushi and Agnes Demetri Belushi. He grew up in a family with two older siblings, John Belushi and Marian Belushi, and later welcomed a younger brother named Billy. Belushi attended Whitten High School and went on to study at DuPage College before graduating from the University of Southern Illinois in Carbondale with a degree in Speech and Theater Arts.

At the age of 23, Belushi decided to follow in his older brother John's footsteps and pursue a career in acting. His debut role was a small appearance in Brian De Palma's thriller "The Fury" (1978), although he was not credited for the role. He then had a more significant role in the sitcom "Working Stiffs" (1979), but the show was canceled after only four episodes. Despite this setback, Belushi caught the attention of film directors and began receiving regular offers for movie roles.
