Lieutenant James Butler Bonham
James Butler Bonham, an American military officer, played a significant role in the Texas Revolution. Born in South Carolina around 1799, he was a cousin of William Travis and Andrew Butler.
Early Life and Education
Bonham attended the College of South Carolina in 1824 but was expelled in 1827 for leading student protests. He subsequently studied law and practiced in Pendleton before being jailed for contempt of court.
Service in South Carolina and Alabama
Bonham served as an assistant to Governor James Hamilton of South Carolina during the Nullification Crisis of 1832. He also served as a captain in the Charleston Artillery Company. In 1834, he relocated to Montgomery, Alabama.
Involvement in the Texas Revolution
In 1835, Bonham traveled to Texas and helped organize the "Mobile Greys" cavalry company. He joined the Texas Army as a lieutenant in December 1835. Despite not commanding a unit, Bonham earned a reputation for his leadership and strategic thinking.
Mission to the Alamo
Bonham was among the defenders of the Alamo in San Antonio. In February 1836, William Travis sent him to seek reinforcements. Bonham successfully broke through Mexican lines and returned with a message from Robert Williamson promising assistance.
Death at the Alamo
On March 6, 1836, Bonham was killed during the Battle of the Alamo. He is believed to have perished alongside his cannon crew inside the mission's church.
Legacy
The city of Bonham, Texas, is named in his honor. The house where he lived in his hometown of Saluda, South Carolina, is now a museum. Schools in San Antonio, Abilene, Midland, and Temple bear his name. A Liberty ship built during World War II was also named after James Butler Bonham.
