Breaking Ranks with the GOP

In 2001, Jeffords made waves when he became the only Republican to vote against President Ronald Reagan's tax cut plan. This move further distanced him from his party.

Departure from the Republican Party

Jeffords's disapproval of President George W. Bush's policies, particularly the tax cuts favoring the wealthy, reached a breaking point in 2001. He formally left the Republican Party and became an independent, caucusing with the Democrats.

Independent Senator

As an independent, Jeffords often played a pivotal role in the Senate. In 2002, he was one of 23 senators who voted against authorizing the use of military force in Iraq.

Legacy and Death

Jeffords died from Alzheimer's disease on August 18, 2014. A memorial service was held on August 22 at Christ the King Grace Congregational Church in Rutland. He was buried at North Cemetery in Shrewsbury.
