Early Life and EducationJames Barry Sicking was born on March 5, 1934, in Los Angeles, California, to Andy Sicking and Sue Paxton. He graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1959 and also studied at the University of Hawaii.
Career
James Sicking's breakthrough role came in the 1980 Oscar-winning film "Ordinary People," where he played Ray Hanley. From 1981 to 1987, he portrayed the tough-as-nails S.W.A.T. officer Howard Hunter in the critically acclaimed police drama series "Hill Street Blues." This role earned him an Emmy nomination.
Personal Life
Sicking married Mary Blackman on May 19, 1953, but they later divorced. He then met Florine Kaplin while attending university, and they married on September 1, 1962. The couple had two children: a son, Andrew (named after James Sicking's father), who became an actor; and a daughter, Emily.
Legacy
James Sicking passed away from complications related to dementia at his home in Los Angeles on July 13, 2024, at the age of 90. He will be remembered for his memorable performances in films and television, particularly his iconic role as Howard Hunter in "Hill Street Blues."
