Early Life and Education
Born on March 3, 1949, in Cordova, Alabama, the astronaut's upbringing and academic achievements were marked by a strong foundation:
Graduated from Opelika High School in 1966.
Earned a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Auburn University in 1972.
Obtained a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Colorado State University in 1974.
Military Service and Teaching Career
Upon graduating from Auburn University, he served in the U.S. Army's 2nd Battalion, 48th Infantry Division, stationed in Germany.
Returning to the United States, he taught for three years at the U.S. Military Academy.
NASA Career
1984: Joined NASA's Johnson Space Center.Participated in the mission control of Space Shuttle flights 51-D, 51-F, 61-C, and 51-L.
Served on the commission investigating the Challenger disaster in 1986.
Astronaut Selection and Training
June 1987: Chosen as a NASA astronaut candidate.Completed astronaut training from August 1987 to August 1988.

Mission STS-101: May 19 - 29, 2000; nine days, 20 hours, nine minutes, and eight seconds in space. Specialist Mission 4; performed a spacewalk for six hours and 44 minutes.
Mission ISS Expedition 2: March 8 - July 21, 2001; 132 days in space. Pilot, second ISS Expedition crew.
