Biography of Jan Brzechwa

The pseudonym "Brzechwa" means "jester" or "talkative". Jan Brzechwa was born in Zhytomyr in a Jewish family. His cousin was the poet Bolesław Leśmian. Brzechwa wrote poems, songs, as well as fairy tales, fantastic stories, and fables.

Brzechwa also translated Russian literary classics such as Pushkin, Chekhov, Ilya Ilf, and Yevgeny Petrov into Polish. The writer gained the most popularity for his tales about Pan Kleks, including "The Academy of Pan Kleks" (1946), "The Journeys of Pan Kleks" (1961), and "The Triumph of Pan Kleks" (1965). All of the tales were adapted into films by Krzysztof Gradowski:
