Early Life and Education

Josef Vojtěch Klecanda was born in Malonice, Bohemia, in 1855. After graduating from grammar school, he briefly pursued engineering studies. In 1875, he was drafted into the army and became a teacher at a military academy.

Teaching and Literary Debut

In 1883, Klecanda arrived in Teplice with the mission of establishing the first Czech-language school. He quickly became a prominent figure in the local teaching community. During this period, he made his literary debut and compiled and published a local literary almanac.

Journalistic and Literary Career

In 1887, Klecanda retired from teaching due to a nervous disorder. He dedicated himself to journalism and literary work. He founded the political weekly "Vyšehrad," which ran for 13 years. Klecanda's writings addressed themes of folk life and voiced strong opposition to the Germanization of northern Bohemia. He published a total of 21 books.

Political Activism and National Independence

During the First World War, Klecanda and his sons played an active role in the anti-Austrian movement. They were ardent supporters of national self-determination and welcomed the emergence of an independent Czechoslovak state.

Legacy
