Early Life and Military Career

Born to a noble family in Warsaw, Jan Krukowiecki's father received the title of Count from Empress Maria Theresa. After completing his education at the Theresianum in Vienna, Krukowiecki joined the Austrian army in 1786. He served in campaigns against the Ottoman forces in the Balkans and gained notoriety for his numerous duels. In 1794, he resigned from the army when Austria supported the suppression of the Kościuszko Uprising.

Napoleonic Wars

In 1806, Krukowiecki joined the French army and later fought in the campaigns of Napoleon's Duchy of Warsaw. He participated in the invasion of Russia in 1812 and was severely wounded during the battles near Smolensk. His bravery earned him the Order of the Legion of Honor and the rank of Brigadier General in 1813. He commanded a cavalry brigade during the Battle of the Nations.
