At the age of thirteen, Jan van Drecht longed to join the prestigious Ajax football club but faced rejection during tryouts. However, his neighbor and Ajax player Jan van der Veen intervened, leading to van Drecht's eventual acceptance into the club.
Ajax Years: Midfield to Goalkeeper
Initially playing as a right winger for Ajax's sixth youth team, van Drecht showcased versatility by transitioning to central midfield and defense. However, the absence of goalkeepers presented an opportunity, and he was shifted to the goalkeeper position.
Professional Career
From 1950 to 1961, Jan van Drecht played for Ajax, making 72 appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie. Starting as the third goalkeeper behind Aad Visser and Eddy Pieters Graafland, he gained more playing time when Graafland moved to Feyenoord in 1958.
Success with Ajax
Van Drecht's contribution to Ajax's Eredivisie title victory in the 1959/1960 season remains a highlight of his career. He played a pivotal role in several matches during Visser's absence due to injury.
