Maximiliano Nicolás "Maxi" Pereira was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on June 8, 1984. He began his professional football career at the age of 18, joining Defensor Sporting in the Uruguayan Primera División. Alongside Álvaro González, Pereira formed the backbone of the team's success, helping them win the Liguilla in 2006.

Move to Benfica and Domestic Success

In 2007, Pereira transferred to Portuguese giants Benfica. Initially deployed as a right midfielder, he was shifted to the defense in the 2008/09 season following the departure of Nelson Marqués.
