Biography of Janet Ann Napolitano

Early Life and Education

Janet Ann Napolitano was born on November 29, 1957, in New York. She also lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Albuquerque, New Mexico during her childhood. Napolitano was a Girl Scout and earned the distinction of becoming a lifelong member of the scouting movement. She graduated with honors from Santa Clara University in 1979, earning a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. In 1983, she received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Legal Career

From 1983 to 1984, Napolitano worked as a secretary for Judge Mary Schroeder in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In 1984, she joined the law firm of Lewis & Roca in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Napolitano as the United States Attorney for Arizona, a position she held until 1997. During her tenure, she handled over 6,000 immigration-related court cases. From 1997 to 1998, Napolitano returned to Lewis & Roca before being elected as the Attorney General of Arizona in 1998.

Governorship of Arizona

In 2002, Napolitano won the gubernatorial election in Arizona as a Democrat, defeating Republican candidate Matt Salmon by a margin of 12,000 votes. She officially took office in January 2003 and served two terms as governor. Napolitano was reelected in 2006 with 63% of the votes. As governor, she focused on issues such as education, implementing a program to provide state-funded childcare for all children in Arizona and raising teacher salaries. She also prioritized border security and immigration control, advocating for the involvement of the National Guard in securing the Arizona-Mexico border. Under her leadership, Arizona's budget, which had a $1 billion deficit in 2003, achieved a surplus of around $300 million in 2006.

Secretary of Homeland Security

Napolitano served as the Governor of Arizona until January 2009 when she was appointed as the Secretary of Homeland Security by President Barack Obama. She was confirmed by the Senate on January 20, 2009. In this role, Napolitano focused on national security and oversaw initiatives to enhance border security, counterterrorism efforts, and emergency response capabilities. She served as Secretary of Homeland Security until September 2013.

Later Career and Personal Life

After her tenure as Secretary of Homeland Security, Napolitano became the President of the University of California system in 2013. She served in this role until 2020, overseeing a public research university system with ten campuses. Napolitano is an avid adventurer and enjoys rafting and mountaineering. She has successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. Napolitano has never been married and does not have any children.
