 Early Life and Education

Alfons Noviks was born in Latvia in 1929. In 1955, he graduated from Leningrad State University with a degree in engineering.

 Political Career in the Soviet Union

1958:Joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).
1962-1964:Second Secretary of the Jelgava City Party Committee.

1966-1973:Second and then First Secretary of the Liepaja City Party Committees.

1973-1978:Head of a department in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia (CPL).

1978-1985:First Secretary of the Riga City Party Committee.

1985-1988:Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR.

1988-1990:First Secretary of the CPL.

1986-1990:Member of the Central Auditing Commission of the CPSU.

1979-1989:Deputy of the Soviet of the Union of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from the Latvian SSR.

 Post-Soviet Career

1990:Following the split of the CPL, became a member of the Latvian Democratic Labor Party.

1991:Retired from politics and has rarely given interviews or commented on political events in Latvia since.

2010:Awarded the Order of Three Stars.
