Biography of János Kóka
János Kóka, the Minister of Economy and Transport, was elected as the new chairman of the Hungarian Free Democrats at a congress forming a ruling coalition with the Socialists. He is often referred to as the "man of surprises". It came as a surprise to Hungarians when the well-known young entrepreneur, one of the wealthiest businessmen in the country, was appointed as the head of the economic department in Ferenc Gyurcsány's government. His election as the leader of the Alliance of Free Democrats, which he joined only a year ago, was also seen as unexpected.
Early Life and Career
János Kóka was born in Budapest in 1972 and holds a degree in medical sciences from the capital's university. Prior to his appointment as minister in 2004, Kóka worked for almost 10 years in the rapidly developing field of information technology, holding leading positions in various companies specializing in this area. Starting from 1994, he climbed the corporate ladder from a manager to the CEO of the prominent firm "Elander".
Ministerial Achievements
As the Minister of Economy and Transport, Kóka declared his goal of strengthening the competitiveness of the Hungarian economy, implementing tax reforms, and carrying out privatization programs. He became one of the authors of a 15-year economic development strategy, with a strong focus on the country's participation in European integration.
