György Sztójay

Early Life and Military Career

György Sztójay was a Hungarian general and politician born in 1883. He served in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I on the Eastern and Italian fronts.

Rise in the Military

In 1944, following the German occupation of Hungary and the removal of anti-German officers, Sztójay was appointed Chief of the Hungarian General Staff.

Alliance with the Soviets

As Soviet forces entered Eastern Hungary in late 1944, Sztójay defected to their side. He participated in the signing of an armistice with the USSR as part of Béla Miklós's provisional government.

Post-War and Arrest

Sztójay retired from the military in 1946. However, he was arrested in 1949 on charges of espionage and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1950.

Release and Later Years

Sztójay was released in 1956 and did not engage in any further public activities until his death in 1979.
