Childhood and Education
Jared Polis was born in Boulder, Colorado, on May 12, 1975. He attended Princeton University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993.
Entrepreneurial Ventures
American Information Systems (1993-1998)During his college years, Polis founded his first company, American Information Systems, an Internet service provider. He sold the company in 1998 for $22 million.
Bluemountain.com (1999)
Polis and his parents sold their family's online greeting card company, Bluemountain.com, to Excite@Home for $900 million.
Provide Commerce Inc. (2000-2005)
In 2000, Polis founded the Jared Polis Foundation to fund educational programs in Colorado. He continued his business ventures and sold Provide Commerce Inc., a retail software company, to Liberty Media Corp. for $477 million in 2005.
Political Career
US House of Representatives (2009-2019)In 2008, Polis was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first openly gay person elected to Congress. He served until 2019.
Governor of Colorado (2019-Present)
On November 6, 2018, Polis defeated Republican Walker Stapleton in the Colorado gubernatorial election. He became the first openly gay and first Jewish governor of Colorado.
