Jaron Lanier, a renowned scientist in data visualization and biometrics, is widely recognized as the creator of the term "virtual reality." He is a visionary futurist, a prolific author, a composer, a conceptual artist, a philosopher, and a key figure in the digital era.
Early Life and Education
Lanier was born in New York City into a family of European Jewish immigrants, his father a writer-scientist and his mother a pianist. At the age of nine, he lost his mother in a tragic car accident. Despite this adversity, he excelled academically, enrolling in the University of New Mexico at just 13 years old, where he studied with renowned scientists Marvin Minsky and Clyde Tombaugh.
Pioneering Research and Invention
Throughout his career, Lanier has received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation to pursue groundbreaking research in data notation, educational video simulations, and video game development. In 1984, he introduced the concept of virtual reality with the publication of an influential article in Scientific American.
Together with Thomas G. Zimmerman, Lanier co-founded VPL Research, a company dedicated to developing virtual programming languages. VPL secured a NASA contract for research in visual communication, and its annual revenue peaked at $6 million. However, the company ultimately faced financial difficulties and declared bankruptcy in 1990.

In the 1990s, Lanier held academic positions at Columbia University and the New York University School of the Arts. He also played a pivotal role as Chief Scientist for Internet2, a cutting-edge initiative to enhance internet connectivity.

From 2006 to 2009, Lanier served as a researcher at Microsoft, where he contributed to the development of the Kinect motion detection system. His pioneering work continues to influence the advancement of virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and data analysis.
