Jason Castro is an American folk-pop singer and songwriter who primarily performs acoustic pop and folk-pop music. He gained recognition as a musician by finishing fourth on the seventh season of the popular reality show "American Idol". After the show, Jason signed a contract with Atlantic Records, and his self-titled debut album is expected to be released in early 2010.

Early Life and Influences

Jason Castro was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in the city of Rowlett, Texas, where he currently resides. His parents, Rene and Betsy Castro, are Colombian, and he is the first member of his family to be born in the United States. Jason's siblings, Michael and Jackie, were born after him and are also involved in the world of music as songwriters. Jason's first language was Spanish.

Jason's interest in music was greatly influenced by his father, who also wrote songs in his free time while working as an architect for swimming pool design. Jason was raised according to the principles of the Christian religion. In high school, he was passionate about football and performed well academically, achieving a score of 1340 out of a possible 1600 on his final exams.

Rise to Fame on American Idol

Jason pursued higher education at Texas A&M University, specializing in construction science. It was during his time at university that he auditioned for "American Idol". For his audition, Jason performed the song "Crazy" by Ray LaMontagne. However, the televised version of his audition was not shown until the finale of the show due to legal restrictions on the song.

Jason became the first contestant in the history of "American Idol" to play a musical instrument on stage. Throughout the show, he consistently showcased his talent and was praised by judges, with Simon Cowell naming him as one of his personal favorites. Larry King conducted a poll, and the majority of viewers wanted to see Jason as the winner. Despite this support, Jason was eliminated from the competition on May 7, 2008.

Personal Life

On October 31, 2009, Jason proposed to Mandy Mayhall, a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and his girlfriend of one and a half years. He proposed at a Halloween party before the Oklahoma and Kansas football game, with the couple dressed as Belle and the Beast from the Disney film "Beauty and the Beast." Jason and Mandy had started dating in 2008 when he first appeared on "American Idol," but they had known each other since high school in Rowlett. Mandy can be seen in Jason's music video for his song "Let's Just Fall In Love Again."
