Jayananda Thakur: A Life of Devotion and Preaching

Born in Dayton, Ohio into an affluent American family, Jayananda Thakur (born Jim Corr) embarked on a spiritual journey that would forever leave its mark on the world.

Encounter with Krishna Consciousness

In 1967, while working as a taxi driver in San Francisco, Jim Corr crossed paths with devotees of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), founded by Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Deeply moved by their teachings, he received spiritual initiation in the same year, adopting the Sanskrit name Jayananda Das.

Establishing the San Francisco Temple

As a dedicated disciple, Jayananda Das played a pivotal role in founding the first Krishna temple in San Francisco, serving as its president. His leadership and unwavering enthusiasm helped lay the groundwork for the spread of Krishna consciousness in the Western world.

The Ratha-Yatra Festival

Jayananda Das was instrumental in organizing the first Ratha-Yatra festival in the West, a grand celebration that has become an annual tradition for Krishna devotees worldwide. This colorful and vibrant event showcases the beauty and joy of Vaishnavism.

Final Resting Place

On June 3, 2012, Jayananda Thakur's mortal remains were laid to rest in a sacred Samadhi at the Jagannatha Temple in Rajpur, India. His legacy lives on in the countless souls he touched with his teachings and his unwavering devotion to Lord Krishna.
