Jason Hart: Living with a Rare Heart Condition

Jason Hart, a British baby, is a victim of the Long QT Syndrome, a congenital heart condition. Unlike most children who react to sharp and loud sounds with a smile, Jason's heart stops when he hears such noises. This rare condition puts him at risk of sudden cardiac arrest from strong stimuli. Similar to the "lullaby song" in Chuck Palahniuk's novel "Lullaby," which is capable of killing anyone who accidentally listens to it, normal nursery rhymes and lullabies can be deadly for young Jason due to his extreme sensitivity to strong sensations.

A Family Legacy

Jason Hart was born in November 2013. He inherited his heart problems from his mother, 25-year-old Kelly Hart, who also suffers from the same condition. Kelly understands firsthand how a disease can complicate a child's life. Even a simple clap of hands can be fatal for Jason. To protect him, his parents avoid making sudden loud noises and take precautions to shield him from strong sensations. They don't have phones or doorbells in their home, and all of Jason's toys are carefully selected to ensure they don't make any sharp or loud sounds.

A Life Full of Restrictions

Jason's condition also limits his exposure to sudden changes in temperature, preventing him from enjoying activities like swimming in the sea or pool. Going outside poses a risk as well, as the external world is full of mostly harmless but sharp sounds. Kelly was diagnosed with a heart defect when she was only 10 years old, after fainting while swimming. It took medical professionals nearly six months to identify her condition, during which time she experienced multiple fainting episodes. Today, Kelly has a special device implanted in her heart to restart it if necessary.

Parental Concerns

When Kelly discovered she was pregnant with Jason, she and her partner Greg Allen, a builder, were overjoyed. However, their happiness was tinged with fear because Kelly suspected that their child might inherit her dangerous condition. Jason was born through a caesarean section, and the very next day, their fears were confirmed — their son had indeed inherited his mother's illness. The early diagnosis allowed for some advantages, but Kelly was acutely aware of the challenges their son would face throughout his life. Despite their utmost caution, there is still no guarantee of Jason's safety. Recently, he narrowly escaped injury when his mother accidentally broke a glass, which produced a sound that could have triggered a cardiac arrest.

The Future

Medications can partially control Jason's condition, but their effectiveness is limited. In the future, he may need a cardiac pacemaker, but such a procedure is not possible at such a young age. Jason's life will always be marked by restrictions and precautions, as the slightest unexpected sensation could have catastrophic consequences. The Hart family is determined to do everything in their power to keep Jason safe and ensure he has the best possible quality of life despite his condition.
