Jean Alesi: A Life in Racing

Jean Alesi, an Italian-born French racing driver, began his career in karting before moving to circuit racing in the Renault 5 series and then Formula Renault Turbo. In 1986, he debuted in French Formula 3 and finished the season second, behind the more experienced Yannick Dalmas.

Dominance in Formula 3 and F3000

In 1987, Alesi won the French Formula 3 championship with seven victories in 15 races. He made his international F3000 debut in 1988 and won the championship the following year, narrowly edging out compatriot Éric Comas.

Promising F1 Debut with Tyrrell

Alesi made his Formula 1 debut at the 1989 French Grand Prix for Tyrrell-Cosworth, finishing fourth. In 1990, he drove for Tyrrell for a full season. At the season-opening race in Phoenix, he led for 25 laps in his inferior car, notably holding off Ayrton Senna. A second place finish at the Monaco Grand Prix caught the attention of top teams.

Disappointment at Ferrari

Alesi chose to join Ferrari for the 1991 season. Ferrari had been a championship contender in 1990, and his compatriot Alain Prost was the most successful driver in Formula 1 history at the time. However, Ferrari faced significant speed issues from the start of the 1991 season, struggling to compete for wins or titles. Prost even chose to retire rather than continue with the struggling team.

Unlucky Move to Benetton

After five seasons with Ferrari, Alesi moved to Benetton in 1996. However, Benetton experienced similar problems to Ferrari, and Alesi's career began to decline after Renault left Formula 1.

Struggle with Sauber and Prost

Alesi spent the 1998-99 seasons with the midfield team Sauber, scoring only 11 points in two seasons. His move to Alain Prost's team in 2000 was a disaster. Despite a promising driver pairing with Nick Heidfeld, the team finished last in the championship, failing to score any points.

Resurgence with Jordan

Alesi's 2001 season was slightly better. He scored points in Monaco, Montreal, and Hockenheim and did not retire from any races due to mechanical issues.

Return to Jordan and Retirement

Following disagreements with Prost, Alesi left his team before the Hungarian Grand Prix and joined Jordan. He scored points once more at Spa and retired from Formula 1 after the Japanese Grand Prix.
