Jean Jouvenet: A Master of Historical Painting
Jean Jouvenet, a renowned historical painter, was born into a family of artists in Rouen, France, in 1644. His father, Laurent Jouvenet the Younger, was a talented painter and Jouvenet's first teacher.
Childhood and Artistic Development
From a young age, Jouvenet displayed exceptional artistic talent. At the age of 17, he was sent to Paris by his father, where he studied the works of Nicolas Poussin and other masters.
Early Success and Artistic Achievements
In 1673, Jouvenet's painting "Christ Healing the Paralytic" gained recognition. The same year, he received the second prize from the Paris Academy of Art and was inducted as a member two years later. In 1681, he became a professor at the Academy and later served as its rector in 1707.
Artistic Style and Techniques
Jouvenet's drawing style was somewhat mannered, yet elegant and noble. His use of color tended towards an unpleasant pale yellow, but his chiaroscuro and lighting were excellent. He compensated for his weakness in linear perspective by collaborating with other artists.
Major Works and Legacy
Jouvenet's works adorn many Parisian churches and the Louvre Museum. Notable paintings include:

A Triumph Over Adversity
In his later years, a paralysis hindered Jouvenet's ability to use his right hand. Undeterred, he continued to paint with his left hand.
