Stephen Joseph Harper: The 22nd Prime Minister of Canada
Born on April 20, 1959, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Stephen Joseph Harper became the 22nd Prime Minister of Canada on February 6, 2006.
Early Life and Education
Harper earned an economics degree from the University of Calgary. Before entering politics, he taught economics and served as an aide to a Conservative Member of Parliament.
Political Career
Reforming CanadaIn the late 1980s, Harper played a prominent role in the Reform Party of Canada. He was elected as a member of the House of Commons (Canada's lower house) in 1993, representing the party until 1997.
Conservative Coalition
From 1997 to 2002, Harper served as Vice President, and later President, of the National Citizens Coalition, a conservative advocacy group.
Leadership of the Conservative Party
In 2002, Harper became the leader of the Canadian Alliance. In 2003, the Alliance merged with the Progressive Conservative Party, forming the Conservative Party of Canada. Harper has been the leader of the Conservative Party since March 2004.
Prime Ministership
After leading his party to victory in the 2006 election, Harper became Prime Minister of Canada. He served in this capacity until 2015.
Personal Life
Harper married Laureen Teskey in 1991. They have two children. His interests include hockey history, and he is currently working on a book on the subject.
