Biography of Paul Martin
Paul Martin is the 21st Prime Minister of Canada. He received his philosophical and historical education at the University of Toronto. In 1963, he married Sheila Ann Cowan and they have three sons. Before entering politics, Martin achieved significant success in business.
The Path to Leadership
Martin was elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada at a congress held in Toronto and is most likely to become the 21st Prime Minister of the country. The current head of government, Jean Chrétien, intends to step down after 10 years in power. The journey to leadership for the 65-year-old Martin was by no means easy. In 1990, he came close to achieving this goal but lost to Chrétien. In Chrétien's government, Martin became the Minister of Finance. He achieved the first deficit-free budget in three decades and significantly reduced the country's debts.
In June of last year, Chrétien took away Martin's portfolio, believing that he was too actively conducting his pre-election campaign.

His father, Paul Martin Sr., was a member of the House of Commons of Canada for 39 years and served as a cabinet minister for nearly two decades. He is considered the architect of post-war social policy. Martin Jr. was first elected as a member of the federal House of Commons at the age of 50 and was subsequently re-elected three times in one of the constituencies in Montreal.
