Jean Cousin the Elder

Early Life and Career

Jean Cousin the Elder was a French painter, sculptor, and engraver who played a pivotal role in the development of French art. His life remains shrouded in obscurity, but his works bear witness to his profound artistic talent.

Painting and Glasswork

Cousin initially specialized in painting on glass, creating magnificent windows for the Sens Cathedral, the choir of Saint-Gervais Church in Paris, and the Notre-Dame de Villeneuve-sur-Yonne church. These works display a refined style and technical mastery.

Oil Paintings

Among his few extant oil paintings, the most notable are "The Last Judgment" (Louvre, Paris) and "Eva prima Pandora" (Louvre, Paris). "The Last Judgment" is a chaotic and opulent composition, while "Eva prima Pandora" depicts a nude reclining woman with exaggerated anatomy. Both works reveal Cousin's study of Dutch influences.

Sculpture and Other Works

Cousin's sculptural oeuvre includes portrait busts and bas-reliefs. He also produced engravings and other works, many of which were executed by assistants based on his designs. In 1560, he published a treatise on perspective and in 1571, a seminal work on human proportions and their depiction in various poses and perspectives.

Influence and Legacy

Jean Cousin the Elder has been likened to his illustrious contemporary, Albrecht Dürer. His son, Jean Cousin the Younger, also became a renowned artist. Trained by his father, he quickly established himself as a talented portraitist. The works of father and son are sometimes indistinguishable to experts.
