Early Life and Imprisonment
Jean d'Artois, known as "Sans Terre" (Landless), was the son of Robert III d'Artois and Jeanne, daughter of Charles de Valois. After his father's condemnation and flight, Jean and his siblings were imprisoned by King Philip VI of France.
Knighthood and Inheritance
In 1350, upon the succession of Philip VI's heir, John II the Good, Jean was released from prison. Following the execution of Raoul de Brienne, Count of Eu, Jean was knighted and granted the County of Eu in the same year.
Military Exploits
In 1356, Jean assisted King John II in arresting Charles the Bad and his supporters in Rouen for plotting against the king. He also participated in the conquest of Évreux and the capture of Breteuil. Alongside the king, Jean fought in the Battle of Poitiers, where he was taken prisoner.
Upon his release, Jean led a band of brigands and in 1360, he besieged and plundered Péronne, massacring its inhabitants. He campaigned in Picardy in 1369 and fought in the Battle of Roosebeke in 1382. In 1383, he pillaged Berg.
Marriage and Children
Jean d'Artois married Isabella, daughter of Jean II, Viscount of Melun, in 1352. Together, they had the following children:
