Biography of Jean Pascal
Jean Pascal, a Canadian professional boxer of Haitian descent, was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on October 28, 1982. His mother, a nurse, and his well-known politician father relocated to Laval, Quebec, Canada in 1986 along with Jean and his older brother, Nicholson Poulard.
Early Life and Boxing Career
Jean Pascal developed a passion for playing football and hockey while his brother, Nicholson, took up boxing. In 1996, Nicholson became the champion of Quebec, which inspired Jean to start attending boxing training at the Champions Saint-Michel club at the age of 14. His trainer, Sylvain Gagnon, recognized his talent and predicted a successful career for him. Jean idolized American boxer Roy Jones Jr. and admired the Rocky Balboa movies, claiming that one day he would become just like Rocky, but black.
Professional Boxing Success
Jean Pascal's boxing career progressed successfully, and in 2004, he represented Canada in the Olympics held in Athens. Starting from 2005, Pascal established himself as a professional boxer in the light heavyweight division. He became the champion of Canada and Quebec, followed by a victory in the Trans-American match. Despite losing consciousness during a match due to a skull hematoma, Pascal continued to strive towards his goal of becoming the best in the world. To face the then-world champion, Romanian boxer Adrian Diaconu, Pascal even moved up to the super middleweight division.
In June 2009, Pascal won the World Boxing Council (WBC) world championship title by defeating Adrian Diaconu. He successfully defended his title against Diaconu in a rematch later that year. In August 2010, Pascal retained his title in a fight against American boxer Chad Dawson. His bout with the legendary Bernard Hopkins in December of the same year ended in a draw. Hopkins went on to become the oldest world champion in the light heavyweight division at the age of 46. Pascal had subsequent matches, including a rematch with Hopkins in May 2011, which Hopkins won by decision.
Recent Career and Future Match
In August 2012, Jean Pascal returned to the ring but had to stop his fight against American boxer Tavoris Cloud due to a hand injury. However, he managed to win a points decision against Polish boxer Aleksy Kuziemski in December of the same year, despite suffering another hand injury. Pascal's match with Lucian Bute in January 2014 was postponed due to Bute's injury but resulted in Pascal winning by unanimous decision.
Currently, all eyes are on Jean Pascal's upcoming match against world champion Sergey Kovalev on March 14, 2015. Kovalev is considered the favorite, but Pascal is determined to win. Boxing legend Bernard Hopkins, Pascal's former world champion and fan, believes in Pascal's unconventional style and considers his chances of winning the match to be quite high.
