Early Life and Education
Born on October 20, 1967, in Mexico City, Mexico, Laura Serrano had a passion for soccer but embarked on her boxing journey at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where she pursued a law degree.
Boxing Career
Despite initial resistance from her mother and brothers, Serrano obtained a professional boxing license and quickly gained recognition for her talent. She sparred with men to prepare for her fights, inspiring numerous women to follow suit.
Debut and Controversial Draw
Serrano's debut fight against Christy Martin in Las Vegas on May 7, 1994, ended in a controversial draw, with many believing she was robbed of the victory.
World Title and Notable Victories
In 1995, Serrano defeated Deirdre Gogarty to claim the world championship. She defended her title with wins over Maria de las Nieves Garcia, Cheryl Nance, and Gina Greenwald.
Obstacles in Mexico
In 1947, a law banned professional female boxing in Mexico. Serrano played a pivotal role in overturning this law, as it violated the constitutional principle of gender equality.
Late Career and Retirement
After overcoming a leg injury, Serrano returned to the ring in 1999 and became the first Mexican female boxer to win a world title. She retired from boxing in April 2008, expecting a child with her husband.
Other Accomplishments
Serrano is also a lawyer and a poet. She speaks four languages: Spanish, English, Italian, and Portuguese. Her success in boxing broke barriers and paved the way for future female fighters.
