Early Life and Family
Jeanne of Valois was born on 24 June 1343, as the seventh child and third daughter of John, Duke of Normandy (later King John II of France), and his first wife, Bonne of Luxembourg. Her father had a total of eleven children, of whom seven survived into adulthood.
Betrothal and Marriage
On 21 June 1347, the four-year-old Jeanne was betrothed to Henry of Brabant, who was at least twelve years old. However, tragedy struck when Jeanne's mother died on 11 September 1349, and her fiancé passed away just two months later.
In February 1350, John II married again, to Jeanne of Auvergne. He ascended to the throne in August 1350. To strengthen his dynastic position, he married Jeanne to Charles II of Navarre, who was related to the last ruling Capetians. The wedding took place on 12 February 1352.
Conflict and Betrayal
However, the marriage did not bring peace between the two rulers. In 1354, John II invaded Charles II's territories in Normandy and imprisoned him in 1356. Charles II was released a year and a half later, only to resume his hostility towards the French crown.
Reconciliation and Children
After the signing of the Treaty of Brétigny with England in 1360, John II reconciled with Charles II in Calais. Charles renewed his support for the French throne. The couple's first child, Marie, was born that year. In the subsequent years, they welcomed other children.
Death and Legacy
Jeanne of Valois died on 3 November 1373, at the age of thirty, in Évreux. She was buried in the Abbey of Saint-Denis.
