Political Career
Jeff Bingaman is an American politician who serves as the senior United States Senator from New Mexico. He was born in El Paso, Texas, on October 3, 1943.
Education and Military Service
Bingaman graduated from Harvard University in 1965 and then attended Stanford University Law School. He served as a United States Army Reserve officer from 1968 to 1974.
Legal Career and Political Beginnings
After clerking for the New Mexico Attorney General and practicing law privately for nine years, Bingaman was elected Attorney General of New Mexico in 1978. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1982 and has been re-elected in 1988, 1994, and 2000.
Senate Tenure
Bingaman and his fellow New Mexico Senator, Pete Domenici, have been one of the longest-serving duos of incumbent senators. They both hold leadership positions on the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (Domenici as chairman, Bingaman as ranking member). Bingaman is an ardent environmentalist and advocate for energy conservation programs.
Personal Life
Bingaman is married to Anne Kovacovich Bingaman, also a lawyer. She served as Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division under President Clinton.
Their son, John M. Bingaman, is a lawyer in New Mexico who graduated from Stanford University.
